Welcome to The Heart Institute

In 2001, The Heart Institute opened as a joint venture between Staten Island University Hospital and Richmond University Medical Center. When we opened our doors, our mission was not only to save lives but to change the way we save them. Through the work of our esteemed Medical Director, Dr. Joseph McGinn and our distinguished staff, The Heart Institute proudly pioneered one of the most advanced cardiac surgical techniques performed today — a procedure called minimally invasive cardiac surgery/coronary artery bypass grafting, or MICS CABG (pronounced “mix cabbage”).

On January 21, 2005, the first MICS CABG procedure was performed right here at The Heart Institute. The face of coronary surgery was changed forever and The Heart Institute quickly became one of the most prestigious hospitals in the nation.

Today, The Heart Institute offers the only dedicated MICS CABG training program on the east coast. Surgeons from all corners of the globe look to The Heart Institute to learn this advanced procedure. Without the unwavering dedication of our distinguished staff, these achievements would not be possible.
